Omphale's dress (Herakles slaughters the Amazons)
26 x 34"
oil on canvas

As surely as no spider's web was built for the glorification of flies,
the Amazon idea was not designed to enhance women.
--Abby Kleinbaum

Omphale's dress began as a study of a vase painting depicting Herakles
and a companion slaughtering the Amazons-- one of the twelve labours.

The dress itself refers to Herakles' yearlong slavery to the Lydian
queen Omphale, who demanded that he wear women's clothing and perform women's chores.
Herakles' humiliation at her hands has inspired many artists.
