pink is for girls
48" x 36"
oil on canvas

“pink is for girls” begins, on the top layer, with an image from a Roman copy
of the shield of great statue of Athena, over 30 feet high, which once stood
in the Parthenon. One can easily imagine something like that statue in that
building by recalling the great statue of Lincoln in the Lincoln memorial shown on
the back of a five dollar bill and a penny.

I became fascinated with this piece of public art, as it was art which any
Athenian would have seen. The shield of this enormous Athena, per the extant
Roman copy, depicts a beardless Greek youth (on the cusp of adulthood) killing
a woman—a mythical Amazon.

The middle of the painting depicts the penultimate Greek hero, Herakles, defeating
the giant Antaios. It follows closely a vessel painted by Euphronios in 510-500 B.C.
