Yes we both paint, a mother-daughter collaboration

These works are painted exchanges between Joyce Garner and Angie Reed Garner, a mother and a
daughter. They are conversations conducted in images. Each canvas passed from easel to easel,
studio to studio.

Apart from some preliminary discussions concerning scale and the shape of the canvases to be used,
the work proceeded without any plan.

The paintings developed organically with shifts in mood and direction, in the way that conversations often do.

It was most often Joyce who spoke first. She launched each dialogue with a loose
expansive underpainting, which set the stage for the dialogue to follow.

At least within the context of the project, Angie Reed always had the last word.

Most of the paintings went through three rounds of exchange.

Angie Reed and Joyce

The exception is the multi-panel quilt-like piece, patching / pieced (not shown). In this each
artist was responsible for ten squares, ultimately patched together.
Angie Reed's were painted first, and then Joyce made her response.

Financial support for this project came from The Kentucky Foundation for Women (2000)
which helped spur us into action in spite of Angie Reed's then-imminent departure for
Germany. We would like to thank them for their generosity and belief in the project.
